Beware: Pet urine can in fact cause permanent staining on your carpet and upholstery! The urine is initially in a slightly acidic state – it is much easier to clean when fresh and can typically be treated with a “stage 1” topical treatment. Once it dries, it turns alkaline and becomes much more difficult to remove. If left for days, weeks or several months the urine can permanently change the dye structure, causing dye loss or a bleaching effect, which results in permanent staining. Even if the soluble deposits are removed, the damage to the dye structure may already be done.
Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill pathogens (germs) on surfaces in order to reduce the risk of spreading infection. Do this by applying a disinfectant appropriate for the surface you are cleaning, either in a spray or wipe form. Click here for a list of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered disinfectants. Examples of EPA-registered disinfectants approved to kill COVID-19 include: Bleach, hydrogen Peroxide (3%), Isopropyl Alcohol (with 70% or greater alcohol).
We have a fabulous solution for you! And also a few cleaning advices … Few carpet stains are as obvious as blood. But suffering a paper cut on your finger and getting a few drops on the carpet doesn’t mean your shag is ruined. “Hydrogen peroxide will get out blood all day long,” Tarbox says. First, loosen up dried blood with water mixed with a mild detergent. Then scrape off as much blood from the fibers as you can. To get the remainder, apply hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain. The solution will immediately foam when it contacts the blood, so don’t be surprised. Then dab the hydrogen peroxide with towels to dry the carpet. See extra info at marvelmaids.com.
Soil retardants: Most carpets are now factory-treated with a coating that helps the carpet fibers shed water and spills. The key is cleaning up the spills quickly. Once a carpet is five years old or so, you may need to have it retreated, at least in the high traffic areas. The easiest way to check whether carpet retreatment is necessary is to place a few drops of water on the carpet in the questionable areas and see whether the drops bead up or are absorbed quickly into the fibers. If they are absorbed, it’s time to retreat the carpet. The best retreatment chemicals (and usually the only ones recommended by the manufacturers) are fluorochemical based. Scotchgard or any treatment containing Dupont’s Teflon are made from this material. The treatment should take place after cleaning and, for best results, should be gently brushed into the carpet while it is still damp.
For some people, hiring a house cleaner is a no-brainer. But for others, the decision to do so can feel unappealing, inappropriate or just plain daunting. For instance, it might seem financially irresponsible or overly indulgent to those on a budget. It might seem like a huge logistical hurdle to find someone competent and trustworthy. Or it might just seem easier to handle the responsibility all on your own compared with handing off what might feel like specialized tasks in your own home. But take it from others who once made similar justifications for not hiring house-cleaning help, only to ultimately take the plunge: Overwhelmingly, they say they’re thrilled with the decision and only wish they’d done it sooner.
