Transformative coaching benefits… Let’s talk about humans’ favorite transformation mascot: the butterfly. Caterpillars are moving on instinct when they build their cocoons and settle in for a spell. They don’t get a pamphlet that tells them what to do and why, and no one makes any promises to them about what happens next. They don’t go into the transformation knowing they’ll turn into beautiful butterflies or that, on the way there, they’ll pretty much melt into jelly as part of the metamorphosis process. They just take one step at a time and trust their instincts.
Supporting you in moving beyond your present paradigm, liberating you from limited thinking, and expanding possibility beyond your imagination is what good coaching is about. One famous high tech company proposes that we “think different!” Good coaches facilitate this “thinking differently” out of and beyond the box. Transformational coaching is far more powerful than problem solving, which addresses the symptom but not the root cause of the symptom. It is our relationship to our desires that creates suffering. Millions of individuals suffer from having desires, having them fulfilled and from having them unfulfilled. The fulfillment of desires is not a bad thing. If it was, then the fulfillment for the desire for peace, the desire for enlightenment and the desire to end desires would also be seen as something other than good.
Transformational coaching now, and in the future, is being shaped by what’s gone before. Coaching, per se, still has a relatively young history. However, already we’re waving goodbye to some of the more dinosaur methods of old. Instead, coaching is becoming an increasingly professional endeavour, as it really should. We’re not there yet. There are still lessons to be learned, and changes to be made to transformational coaching itself. Connect with the people you lead by using the vision, value and voice model; i.e. communicate an inspiring vision, value people as human beings (not as a means to an end) and give them a voice. Ideally, networking is part of your daily professional activity, not just something you do when you are looking for a job. When it’s time for a career transition, you want your network to be in place already so that you can tap strong, existing professional relationships to expand your network during your search, rather than starting to build it while in transition.
