The term indie is similar. Indie first simply means bands that are not signed to one of the major labels and came from a variety of genres. The internet increased the awareness of many of these bands as it became easier to share music. Many bands that were once considered indie would end up signing with major labels, such as The Strokes and Modest Mouse. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t make a difference what you call these bands. Whether you consider them indie or alternative are merely semantic differences that have no clear solution. The power of the music produced by these artists extends far beyond what these mere labels describe.

It makes sense that we’re seeing a return to DIY culture post-pandemic. People want something that’s going to wake them up, shake things up, and make them feel alive and present. The music was so fun, lively, experimental, fluid, and collaborative. It was a very community-driven time in the music scene, and I think that’s something people are craving after years of lockdown.
The term indie music is a bit like the term pop music, it encompasses a wide range of influences and even genres, it has meant different things at different times, and there is little agreement on what it actually means, and which bands/artists fall under that category. However, a generally agreed upon classification is that indie music is music that has been produced outside of commercial record labels, music that has a DIY approach to both recording and publishing. Brazilian Grand Prix 2019: For those who say there’s nothing left to play for after the championships have been sealed, show them the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, where there wasn’t a position on track left unchallenged and it ended in tears for many – both joy and despair in equal measure. This was Formula 1 in a microcosm. Canadian Grand Prix 2011: Formula 1’s longest-ever race was also one of its most dramatic, as McLaren’s Jenson Button overcame a crash with his team mate, a clash with Fernando Alonso, a puncture, a stop-go penalty for speeding under the Safety Car and a two-hour race stoppage to win, snatching victory on the last lap from Sebastian Vettel – having been dead last at one point during the Grand Prix.
